Spring into SHAPE!!

Well clearly I do not have enough time in the day...lol
So the Spring into Shape event has started and I am into day two.  The weather was fabulous today so along with my car duties and sitting inside a shop for an hour waiting in my car I did get to send part of the day outside.  The only sad part it was doing yard work...ick!

I did get my work out in which was a great thing.  I did a half hr of lower body work on my Wii Biggest Loser game.  I do not know if it was the workout or the heat but I was definitely sweating after the workout.  So lets see if I can keep it up.  So far the only downfall is I haven't been able to be on as much to type anything....ahh tomorrow is a new day!

Who would have thought making sure you work out 30min a day difficult :-(

Spring into SHAPE!!

Well today was officially the first day of my Spring into Shape challenge!

My day started off with grocery shopping!  I decided if I was going to do this right I wanted to make sure that I had enough good food to snack on when I was at home.  If you have been following my blog for a bit now you may remember I signed up to do a Biggest Loser Challenge.  I didn't win, but I have started to eat a lot healthier!!

I did managed to get into a work out.  I did my Biggest Loser Wii game that I just got and I am happy I got my 30min exercise in today.  I had planned to go for a walk on my break at work tonight, that didn't happen, but I am happy I still got a work out in.  Clearly procrastinating is not going to work in this challenge.lol

I plan on using the Wii through the next 2 weeks, but along with that add some variation to additional exercises I do and I hope this time I stick with it.  I know I can eat better as I have been doing it  My issue now is showing myself that I can eat better and work out.

Now lets see how tomorrow is....

Fabulous Friday!!

Yay, Its FRIDAY again and time to start the weekend!

For this weeks song I love the point that the artist is trying to get out to people.  Research shows that the happiest people in the world are not necessarily the ones who are rich or have everything.  Yet in our current society we are becoming more self absorbed and materialistic.  Yet rates of depression have been shown to be going up as well.  If you think back to the things that made you happy when young majority, if not all, would not have been bought!

This video is not a personal favorite of mine, but the lyrics are!

Deal of the Day: BOGO DQ Blizzard

I love DQ and I love their Blizzards!!  Though I think I may love a bit more the Blizzard Fan Club!

With the Fan Club you will receive a Buy One Get One coupon for their Blizzard plus additional benefits and offers.  If you do not want your coupon, did I mention that I love Blizzards!!

Did You know????

Last night I was sitting at work and it was a bit slow, so to kill some time I thought I would checked out this magazine from my work about the company.  Normally it is too busy for me to have time to look at it and really when I get home it is the last thing I want to do is read about my work on my free time.

This article was talking about the importance of Big Brothers and Big Sisters mentoring program and what difference this is making for our younger generation.  "A recent study found that students enrolled in a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs showed increased attendance, improved grades, higher self-worth, and better overall relationships with family and friends after an average of just 18 months participating in the program."  I do not know about you, but the way I see it, if even one child is helped then the program is fabulous.  That one child can in turn help another and I see it as a domino effect!!

So that was the positive point of the article....the rest of this I find not so much...

"Despite the past year's increase in popularity of social media, a recent study reveals we now have one-third fewer friends and confidants than we did two decades ago.  And Americans'  approximate 19 percent jump in leisure time over the past 35 years notwithstanding, the amount of time we spend in face-to-face socializing has fallen from 32 percent in 1965 to a mere 13 percent in 2009.  Why all this self-imposed aloneness? Even a resent movie, The Social Network, depicted our shared loneliness as a glum portrait of isolation in this age of global connection"

I do not know about you, but I do know why this shocked me.  I have not seen The Social Network, but do know that when Facebook came out Canadians were one of the first to go Facebook Crazy and in turn help make the owners super wealthy!! Sure I know I do not talk on the phone to friends or family as much as I use to and sometimes I find it is easier to just send a text message then a call.  Though it seems we as a society are taking everything that helps you have a better quality of life and replacing it with just stuff.

I know I should not have been surprised driving home the other day from work I happened to have Dr. Laura on and she was going over some statistics.  Pretty much the basic details from what she was going over is that our society is become more self absorbed and we care more about our own personal gains and material possessions then we do about the others around us.  So as a society we have more than anyone has had in history, yet we are more depressed now then we have been in the past.

I find that this is sad...is this the legacy we are leaving and teaching our children?

It takes a village to raise a child, but who is going to raise the child since we are too busy tapped into the Internet, TV, cell phones, focusing on our personal gains and our looks.

Tasty Tuesday!

I am all about getting the most out of the food I buy.  There are people starving in the world and I try not to waste if it is at all possible.  Whenever I buy a whole chicken or I make a turkey I love to make a home made soup!

This may sound intimidating, but it is rather easy to do.  I guarantee once you do it the first time, you will not be scared to make home made soup again!

                       Turkey Soup

The first step is to make the broth!

-Heat oil in a large soup pot over medium heat.

-Add some onions, carrots and celery. (feel free to add whatever else you feel for vegetables
in your soup) Cover and cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
-Add the turkey carcass and cover with cold water to 1 inch above the turkey and then turn the heat to high and you will see some foam form on the top. Be sure to scoop all of that foam off!

-Add some parsley, thyme, bay leaf, salt and pepper. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, at least 2 hours, and up to 4 hours (base it on how much time you have). Add water as needed to keep the turkey bones covered.

-Pour the soup base through a colander, of course keep the liquid and let it sit for up to 10 min waiting til you can see the fat.  Like the foam you will scoop this out! (if there is a lot of turkey left on the bones I'll add it back into my soup)

-Now all you have to do it allow the broth to cool and save it til your ready to finish your soup!!

-Add whatever you like to it now.  Add some cut up Turkey meat, the rest of the vegetables and if your wanting you can also add some noodles.  I always add the noodles at the very last moment so that they are not overcooked.
-This last step lasts about 1 hr as I usually simmer it for that long.  Lastly Salt and Pepper to taste!

P.S and just as a secret just between us if short on fresh vegetables I have used the bagged in a pinch!

Enjoy!!

Please Look After Mom-Book Review

I just finished reading Please Look After Mom by Kyung-sook Shin.  This is the English debut for the author, but she has sold many books already in Korea.  I decided rather then doing the traditional reading of this book to try books on tape.  Reality is I knew I would not be able to listen to the CD's at home, but as I work about 25 min away from my house this would allow me about an hour a day during the week to "read" the book on my commute.

This novel is about a rural Korean mother who goes to Seoul with her husband to visit their children and mysteriously disappears from the Seoul Station.  Told from the point of view of a daughter, son, husband and mother.  From these points of view you are able to see how anyone can make mistakes, even when it comes to someone you love.  It also instills just how important a mother is to the family unit.  Please Look After Mom, allows you to feel as though you are the characters or a fly on the wall, as they search for their wife and mother and hear stories of her been spotted in their old Seoul neighborhoods  Through searching for her they are able to learn more about their mother/wife.  Most of they either failed to pay attention to or were not aware of all the years she was physically in their life.

This novel really hits home as it allows you to view your own mother as more then just your mom.  Many of us fail to see our mothers as a woman, wife or even a fragile human being.  It also shows at the same time how selfless the job of a mother is and how very important it is, while at the same time how under appreciated it can be in the moment.

I found the books on tape as a great alternative way to read this book.  Books on Tape I found was especially beneficial with this booking being based in Korea.  I found that it brought more authenticity and realness to the story.  Being able to hear these characters and hear about their Korea and their mother from their own words, made this fictional story seem real to me.

I would definitely recommend reading this book no matter what style you choose.  You will definitely see the beauty in this authors work!

If you are looking for some other great reads why not check out my #50bookpledge reading list.  Its also not too late to start your own!

gro Organic Garden Planner Review

When I was young my family had a huge garden in our back yard.  I remember going out in the yard with them and spending a lot of time in the spring and summer doing fun chores.  I use to help my family plant the seeds, water and pick the weeds.  Of course, the weed picking was the one thing that I had to do the most of, like it or not.

I remember the reward though of getting to go out to the garden and having  a great selection of fresh fruits and vegetables in my back yard.  Plus the taste always seemed so much better then what you could buy at the store. I had always wanted this for my family, but where I live now the lots are so small that I did not think it was possible to arrange to get a garden in my yard and still have a place for the children and dogs to play.

I feel one of the biggest stresses for a lot of people who want to build their own garden is knowing how to start and what to do with it.  Sure I was lucky to have hands on experience in my parents garden when I was younger, some people do not get any experience.  However, that is now many years behind me now and I can honestly say I have forgotten and do not really understand what I am doing.

I was excited recently when I recently had the opportunity to review the groOrganic Garden Planner.  This was perfect timing as I could use this as a resource to get started on looking to create a garden at my property.  I was pleasantly surprised at how user friendly the application was.  You do not need to be a computer genius to use the application and build your own garden.

The great thing is this application works for people who are looking at starting a new garden, like myself or get assistance with an old garden or just ask questions.  I decided to play it safe and use the tutorials just to make sure I knew what I was doing on the site.  I have to say they were all very easy to follow even with distractions, such as children calling you, you will still be able to follow everything fully.

When getting started with the planner it first would like to know your postal code.  This helps the planner know what your weather is like and of course to let the system figure out what grows well in your climate.  This I thought was a big win, especially as I am living far away from the province I grew up in.  Reality is the climate is very different and I can not assume that what my family use to grow would survive out here. Then it asks you on the size of your garden so it can help you determine on what should be planted and how much you can actually do!!  We all want to make sure we are getting the most out of what we spend money on so this clearly is no exception.  Gardening does take some time and money and with the cost of food the more you can grow at home, definitely the better!!

Tori and Dean with their Garden!
The site was wonderful I could design my garden the way I wanted to.  The site would tell me how many plants I could grow in a certain area and where to plant my next one.  I could design it all on the computer and then when it was all designed I could then go ahead and started getting everything together so I could plant it.  The hardest part of the job the groOrganic does for you!

This is not all that you receive with your annual membership.  There are additional features that you can set up so you receive emails from groOrganic so that you know when it is time for things to be planted.  Also, it tells you when you can harvest and where is the best place to rotate your crops for the following years and so much more!!!!

This was a great resource and I am so happy that I get to share this will all of you and think for just their small annual fee you can get started with your own crop and reap the benefits of growing your own garden.   Believe me when I say you will not regret it!  Be sure to check out groOrganic!

Fabulous Friday!!

This is the first week of Fabulous Friday!  I am going to share things with you that I think is Fabulous!  Ofcourse, there are more things that are great about Friday other then it just being the end of the week!  Though most of the posts are going to be music related as I need something to do my happy dance to that the weekend it here!

This weeks Fabulous choice is a song that I absolutely love for many different reasons.  The first reason is that I can listen to it and not have to worry about my children being around.  Second, I love how it is a throw back to classic music and Lastly, I love how the video is art in itself.  The artist has more then enough talent she does not need expensive props to sell the video or herself.

By the way did I mention I love this song ;-).

I love saving time and money!!

I love shopping around and I love the convenience of the internet on how you can do it from the comfort of your own home.  You can check around to find out what store will have the best product to fit your needs.  While at the same time you can save yourself some time and money and not have to drive all around your city.  For people that live in rural areas it allows you to reach out to stores that may not be in your general area.  It definitely is a win/win for all!  Recently I was online and found out about a great website called BECOME.  This website is accessible to all and at Become.com you can do online price comparisons.  I thought I would check it out and to see if it was really great and decided I would use a few different products to do a comparison on.

The first item I had checked out was aluminum wallets. I could not believe the options I was given and from so many stores.  You are able to adjust then the search to a certain price range and you can also find out more about the product and enlarge the pictures.  I thought I would check out a few more products just to see if maybe it was a fluke and this site was too good to be true.  The next product I looked at was animal print luggage.  This may seem like a strange search option, but as I use to sell luggage and I still work in the travel industry I am aware just how important it is to have baggage that sticks out.  I never really see any animal print luggage so figured this should be almost impossible to find.  I was wrong again.  So many options to choose from!

The last option I checked out was a bolero jacket.  I have been looking around for different, inexpensive was to dress up or mix up my current wardrobe.  Guess what the comparison was awesome again.  I even loved the fact it shows your search option in standard and plus sizes.  So not matter your shape this site can help you.  I will be using Become from now on to help save me time and money with my shopping needs and if you would like to be a informed shopper I recommend you check it out as well!

Did You know????

Surprisingly, I am finding out that a lot people are not aware of what Spaghetti Squash is.  A few weeks back one of my Tasty Tuesday post was a Noodle Free Spaghetti and Sauce.  I had made Spaghetti squash as the food to replace the noodles I would have normally had.

Spaghetti Squash is a winter squash that you bake and after it is done cooking the inside of the squash you can use a fork and scrape out the inside of the squash.  The inside of the squash ends up coming out as strands like spaghetti that you can use as a side dish or as a replacement to pasta.

It is quite easy to cook as well.  All you need to do is cut the product lengthwise in half and scrape out the seeds that are inside of the product.  I then put it in a baking dish with the skin side up for about 30-40 minutes at 375*.

If this seems like too much work for you there are so many other ways you can cook it  Check out here.

The next time you are in the grocery store and you see this item.  You will now know what it is and how to cook it.

I am not so much about name brands, but I do love personalized shirts.  We have had personalized T-Shirts done before, but the sad thing is the shirts were always white and BORING.  Okay, I guess I shouldn't say a shirt with my children on it is boring, but really the white shirt was BLAH!  We have done personalized shirts for our daughters birthdays, for gifts for the grandparents.  It is a cute memento for people to have.

I was recently was introduced to T-Shirt Printing.net and was so impressed when I looked at their website it was so fresh and easy to use.  They have 20 years in the business of silk screen printing and can help you not matter if your looking for small or large orders.  They can accommodate you if your looking 12-100,000, so you do not need to feel that that your needs are too big or too small.

Their prices are competitive and they can assist you if your looking for clothing for men, women, children. They can help you if you are looking at having your products neutral for charities, teams or businesses.  What I love the most is they have so many styles you can choose from.  You are not forced to have just one style, you get choices!!  If you are looking for example ladies shirts, you can purchase long sleeved, v-neck, polo, skinny fit, short sleeved or if they do not have it they will work with you so you get the shirt you like.  WOW!  Talk about customer service!

T-Shirt Printing.net definitely is there to help you no matter what your printing needs are.   You can work with them to design the print YOU would like on your shirt or product.  With competitive prices and quick turnaround times how can you go wrong?  The shirt I received fit perfectly and I have washed it many times and the print is still in perfect shape.  No colour is lost at all and its kept its shape  perfectly!

Wordless Wednesday!!!

The best part of a rainy day is being able to enjoy all of the fun things you can do indoors.  We went to an indoor amusement park with the girls and finally both of them are tall enough to go on a lot of the rides :-)

Tasty Tuesday!

So this recipe may not be a love for all, but it was a favorite of my Grandmothers and of mine.  I find for quiche either a dish that you love or you don't!  I think for me it brings back memories of when I was young so of course it always is good for me.   I find though a lot of the times when I eat quiche out, it really does not taste that good. So in the end I decided to start making it myself though I was worried on how to do this.

When I moved out of my parents house I brought a large trunk to my new home and inside of this trunk was a lot of special things that my grandmother had put together for when we had our own home.  Sadly she was no longer living, she actually passed away  8 months before I got married.  It was quite an emotional moment as I open this trunk and find a home made cookbook that she had made for me.  Inside was a note on a piece of papers "bet you thought you were not going to get one".

My grandma had made my sister a cookbook just like the one I had opened in this trunk.  I had assumed as she was no longer with me I would not be receiving a cookbook.  I was very wrong.  It is no fancy cookbook.  Its a home made one where she written in the recipes or cut an pasted.  Though to me there is no cookbook out there that is worth what this one is to me.

In the front of the cookbook it says:

"To Jayda  Love Grandma
I thought you might like to have some of grandma's recipes when you get married some day.  Keep it always and think of me when you are cooking"

Many of the recipes she has dates when we made it for the first time.  She also has little stories about who she got the recipe from or what was her favorite.

This Quiche was a favorite of hers and now I am sharing it with you!

Ham N' Swiss Quiche

1 1/2 cups finely-chopped cooked ham
1 unbaked pie shell
2 cups shredded Canadian Swiss Cheese
3 Eggs beaten
2 Tbsp finely chopped onion
1 tsp Dijon-style mustard

1/4 tsp salt
1 cup table cream
1 Tbsp grated Parmesan Cheese

Place ham in bottom of unbaked pie shell; pack down lightly.  Top with Swiss cheese. Beat Together eggs, onion, mustard and salt.  Gradually stir in cream.  Pour over ham and cheese layers in pie shell. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over surface.  Bake at 375*F for 30-35min or until set.  Makes 1 Fabulous quiche!!
